Anti-Aging
In the pursuit of looking and feeling young,
there are a variety of different products available that are marketed
as anti-aging. They range in form from topical creams, to supplements,
and even experimental procedures.
Many anti-aging products contain high amounts
of antioxidants. Antioxidants are known to prevent agents called
free radicals from damaging cells in the body and the skin. Free
radicals are a result of normal body processes, but they can also
be created by exposure to various environmental factors such as
smoking or ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and can speed
up the aging process. Vitamin E is often cited as the most important
antioxidant because it protects cell membranes and prevents damage
to enzymes associated with them. Vitamin E is also thought to have
anti-aging effects by reducing skin damage from sun exposure and
limiting the production of cancer-causing cells. Vitamin C and
Selenium are also antioxidants noted for their anti-aging benefits.
