Body
Building
Body Building is a competitive sport that involves
the muscular development of contestants. Bodybuilders are judged
on the overall quality of their muscular development. Judging of
body building involves five categories of criteria: mass, definition,
proportion, symmetry, and stage presence.
Judges evaluate the overall muscular mass of
the body building contestant. The perception of muscular size has
been the foundation for bodybuilding since the beginning of the
sport. Yet, mass is only of body building merit when accompanied
by the remaining qualities. Definition involves the degree of muscularity
brought about by a low level of subcutaneous body fat. Defined
muscularity is necessary to fully display a well-developed physique.
Definition is only of value when it allows massively developed muscles
to be displayed. Proportion implies an even balance of muscular
development relative to each muscle group. Successful body building
participants must strive for equal development between all muscle
groups. Symmetry requires an equal development of muscularity on
both right and left sides of the body building physique. Stage
Presence includes posing performance and other factors of general
appearance such as skin tone, grooming, charisma, and poise. Effective
body building stage presentation is vital to display the physique
to its maximum potential.
Body building training involves proper nutrition
(4 to 5 small high-protein meals a day), intense resistance training
(mostly lifting weights) and rest (to let the body recover and build).
