Weight Lifting
Weight lifting is an international sport as
well as a training technique for athletes in other sports. However,
there are many benefits of weight lifting which have not gone unnoticed
to those conscious about their health and fitness. The stress from
lifting weights tears muscle tissues at the microscopic level.
When the muscles recuperate, they become stronger and are therefore
able to support extra stress. Many people who engage in cardiovascular
activities forget about weight lifting exercises when it comes to
burning fat. The reasoning is that aerobic exercise burns off fat,
while weightlifting is only used to build muscle bulk. This belief
is not entirely accurate--the more muscle mass which is gained through
weight lifting, the more fat calories will be burned, even at rest.
When cardiovascular activity is combined with weight lifting, fat
loss is accelerated. Cardiovascular exercise raises muscle metabolism
during the activity and for a brief amount of time after the exercise.
However, weight lifting exercises not only raises muscle metabolism
during the exercise session, but for a substantial period of time
afterwards.
Weight lifting also has benefits to human longevity.
As the body ages, muscle fibers shrink in number and in size, and
also become less responsive to messages from the central nervous
system. These combined factors contribute to the decreases in strength,
balance and coordination that accompany aging. Weight lifting can
slow and even reverse the declines in strength, bone density and
muscle mass that accompany aging.
