Mental Function
The adult brain continues to grow and develop
throughout its entire life. The brain’s development in adulthood
is shaped mostly by outside stimuli. Therefore, it is important
to keep the brain active to maintain (or even improve) mental function.
By experiencing new things, the brain makes new connections. Every
time something new is learned, new pathways are built to increase
mental function. Maintenance of old skills and/or development of
new ones also help to keep up mental function. Sleeping properly
is also important to keep up mental function—8 hours a night is
recommended. A properly hydrated brain will exhibit better mental
function than a dehydrated one, so drinking plenty of water is important.
Of course, proper nutrition is also crucial to mental funtion.
A diet high in fruit and vegetables will benefit the brain and the
body.
Proper health of the body will also help the
mind. Researchers have discovered new evidence that aerobic exercise
can help protect brain tissue from age-related damage and mental
decline. Although studies had previously shown that physical fitness
can improve mental funtion and health in older adults, a new study
provides visible proof of the benefits of exercise in the brain
scans of older adults.
It is also believed that herbal extracts like
ginkgo biloba and nutrients like phosphatidyl serine and DHA (docosahexaenoic
acid), a component of fish oil can greatly assist in promoting mental
function. Recent studies have also found that vitamin E might also
assist in maintaining mental function and decreasing the ill effects
of aging on mental function.
