Antidepressants
While new and better antidepressant medications
are released all the time, sometimes it can be difficult to find
the right prescription drug, or combination of drugs that are effective.
Some people have allergies or sensitivities to these drugs, or take
other medications which could cause dangerous interactions. In addition,
many find the side-effects of psychoactive drugs to be worse than
the disease they are attempting to cure. Natural antidepressants
are drug alternatives that may help in dealing with mild to moderate
depression.
Amino Acids can act as neurotransmitters or
precursors to other neurotransmitters such as serotonin. Supplementing
a diet with amino acids can ease symptoms of depression. Some amino
acids and related compounds used as natural antidepressants are
L-tryptophan, L-tyrosine, L-phenylalanine and 5-HTP. Melatonin and
SAM-e have also been suggested as effective natural antidepressants.
Phytomedicines such as St. John's wort, kava
kava and Ginkgo biloba may also have compounds that act as natural
antidepressants.
