S-Adenosyl-Methionine
S-Adenosyl-Methionine is the scientific name
for the dietary supplement known as SAM-e. S-Adenosyl-Methionine
occurs naturally in every living cell and takes part in several
biological reactions in the human body. S-Adenosyl-Methionine is
also thought to be effective for depression and arthritis.
S-Adenosyl-Methionine has generated a lot of
interest as an antidepressant since it seems to have fewer side
effects than some other antidepressants and works relatively quickly.
S-Adenosyl-Methionine has been available in Europe for twenty years,
it was only introduced to the US in February 1999. S-Adenosyl-Methionine
was the hottest-selling dietary supplement in the United States
in 1999. In Europe it is known as "SAMe", but to avoid
people pronouncing it "same", the name was changed to
SAM-e when it was brought to the US.
S-Adenosyl-Methionine is sold as a prescription
drug in Europe, and is available in the US over the counter. S-Adenosyl-Methionine
is sold in the United States as a dietary supplement and is therefore
not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Product
labels for dietary supplements cannot make overt health claims to
treating anything. Due to the unregulated status of SAM-e there
are significant differences among the types of SAM-e on the market.
