Serotonin
Serotonin is a hormone found in the pineal
gland, blood platelets, digestive tract, and the brain. Also called
5-hydroxytryptamine, serotonin acts as a chemical messenger that
transmits nerve signals between nerve cells.
Serotonin helps to regulate and balance fundamental
aspects of our health and well-being. Deficiencies in the amount
of serotonin available to the brain have been linked with a wide
variety of disorders and everyday problems including depression,
mood swings and mania, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), premenstrual
syndrome (PMS) especially moodiness and food cravings, anxiety,
obsessive-compulsive behavior, eating disorders, particularly bulimia
and binge eating, plus some forms of obesity, irritability and aggression,
poor impulse control, migraine and other types of headache, heightened
sensitivity to pain, drug and alcohol abuse, and sleep disorders,
especially insomnia.
Because of the wide-ranging importance of proper
serotonin levels, there are a variety of antidepressants and diet
drugs which target serotonin as a solution.
