Alzheimer's
Alzheimer disease is a progressive degenerative
disease of the brain that eventually leads to dementia. People
with Alzheimer’s disease suffer degeneration of the cortical regions,
especially the frontal and temporal lobes, of the brain. This make’s
it difficult for the brain’s signals to be transmitted properly.
An estimated 4 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease.
Common symptoms of Alzheimer’s can include
disorientation and confusion, impaired memory and thinking, trouble
performing familiar tasks, changes in personality and behavior,
problems with language and communication, impaired visual and spatial
skills, poor or decreased judgment, loss of motivation or initiative,
and loss of normal sleep patterns.
The exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease is not
understood, but it is most likely caused by a variety of genetic
and environmental factors. The risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease
increases with age. Roughly 10% of people over the age of 65, and
50% of people over 85 suffer from Alzheimer’s. A clear, inherited
pattern of Alzheimer’s disease is found in nearly 10% of all cases.
Since the exact cause of Alzheimer's disease is not known, there
is nothing currently that can be done to prevent it.
