Arterial
Plaque
Arterial plaque is the build-up of a fatty
substance called atheroma in the arteries that can lead to angina,
heart attack or stroke. Cholesterol forms arterial plaque on the
inner walls of blood vessels. The risk of these problems can be
reduced by maintaining normal blood cholesterol levels and can sometimes
require medications.
Over time, arterial plaque can cause thickening
of the artery walls and narrowing of the arteries, a condition known
as arteriosclerosis. When coronary arteries are narrowed by arterial
plaque, they are incapable of supplying enough blood and oxygen
to the heart muscle. Lack of oxygen to the heart muscle can cause
chest pain. Arterial plaque could also cause a blood clot in the
artery, which can clause complete blockage of the artery, leading
to a heart attack. A buildup of arterial plaque in time will cause
coronary heart disease-- the most common cause of death in the United
States, accounting for an estimated 600,000 deaths per year.
