Coronary
Heart Disease
Coronary disease is any condition that interferes
with the heart’s ability to pump blood throughout the body, feeding
oxygen to all tissues and organs. Coronary disease can be caused
by congenital heart defects, but are mostly caused by the narrowing
and hardening of the arteries. This is known medically as coronary
heart disease (CHD)
The primary symptom of coronary heart disease
is angina, temporary chest pain that is due to an inadequate supply
of oxygen to the heart muscle. Those suffering from heart disease
might not experience angina. Heart disease can also cause a lack
of blood in the heart without any warning chest pains or tightness.
This is known as silent ischaemia. Unfortunately, the first sign
for many that they have heart disease is a heart attack, or myocardial
infarction. Heart attacks occur when the blood supply to a part
of the heart is interrupted or stopped. The pain of a heart attack
is usually severe and, unlike angina, is not temporary.
The primary cause of coronary heart disease
is arteriosclerosis—a build up of fatty materials within the walls
of arteries. These build ups are usually caused by fatty deposits
along the innermost layer of the arterial walls which narrow the
space that blood can flow through, which in turn makes blood more
prone to clotting. The fatty deposits can also block the delivery
of nutrients to artery walls causing them to lose their elasticity,
which can lead to high blood pressure, which also increases the
risk of coronary disease.
