Inflammatory
Disorders
There are a few different types of inflammatory
disorders. Basically, any disorder that causes chronic inflammation
is an inflammatory disorder. Inflammation is a process in which
the body’s white blood cells and chemical defenses protect against
infection from foreign substances. In inflammatory disorders, however,
the immune system triggers an inflammatory response without foreign
substances present. The body responds as if normal tissues are infected,
which causes damage. Some of the defensive chemicals cause a leak
of fluid into the tissues, resulting in swelling. This protective
process may stimulate nerves and cause pain.
Some, but not all, types of arthritis can be
considered inflammatory disorders. Arthritis is a general term
that involves inflammation in the joints. Some types of arthritis
associated with inflammation include: rheumatoid arthritis, shoulder
tendinitis or bursitis, gouty arthritis, amd polymyalgia rheumatica.
There are other inflammatory disorders that
involve the internal organs. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is
a group of inflammatory disorders that occur in the digestive tract.
The main symptoms are abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, and diarrhea
or constipation. Fever and loss of appetite may also occur. Some
cases involve complications develop outside the intestines including
problems with the eyes, liver, blood, and bones. Ulcerative colitis
and Crohn's disease are the most common types of inflammatory disorders
occurring in the digestive tract.
