Vascular
Disease
Vascular disease or disease of the blood vessels
(arteries, veins, and capillaries) is known medically as angiopathy.
There are two basic types of vascular disease, microangiopathy and
macroangiopathy.
Microangiopathy involves the thickening of
small blood vessel walls which become so thick and weak that they
bleed, leak protein, and slow the flow of blood. Diabetics, for
example, may develop microangiopathy with thickening of capillaries
in many areas including the eye.
During Macroangiopathy, fat and blood clots
accumulate in the large blood vessels, sticking to the vessel walls,
and blocking the flow of blood. Three common forms of macroangiopathy
are coronary artery disease (in the heart), cerebrovascular disease
(in the brain), and peripheral vascular disease (often affecting
vessels in the legs).
