Blood Vessels
In the human body, blood circulates
in tubes called blood vessels. Blood vessels include a
network of arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules, and veins.
The arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the body’s
cells, tissues and organs. The
arteries branch out into arterioles, smaller arteries that carry
blood to the capillaries. The capillaries are minute blood vessels
that permeate tissues. From the capillaries, blood is carried to
the venules (small veins), which join together to form veins--the
blood vessels which return blood to the heart.
Circulatory problems arise when these blood
vessels become blocked or excessively constricted. In the blood
vessels, these interruptions in normal blood flow can be brought
on by various conditions. Weakened arterial walls can balloon outward
and form aneurysms that trap blood. Veins can stretch and cause
their internal valves to malfunction, resulting in varicose veins.
Vascular disease can cause blood vessels to constrict. Maintaining
circulatory system and blood vessel health is vital to the prevention
of heart disease and the quality of general heath.
