There are a variety of heart supplements available
that can help to maintain a healthy heart. No matter how balanced
eating habits are, it can be difficult to get enough heart supplements
such as folic acid, magnesium and potassium from just foods. Taking
a general daily multivitamin should be adequate. In addition, vitamins
C and E have also been cited as heart supplements which promote
a healthy heart. Vitamins C and E are antioxidant nutrients protective
against free-radical damage, a leading cause of heart disease.
Garlic is another noted heart supplement. Studies have shown that
garlic lowers LDL cholesterol, lowers triglyceride levels, and raises
HDL cholesterol. Garlic as a heart supplement has also been shown
to lower blood pressure in some cases.
Hawthorn has also been used as a heart
supplement to help dilate coronary vessels, which in turn improve
the blood and oxygen supply to the heart. Hawthorn teas and capsules
are available heart supplements. Some nutritionists also recommend
ginseng, which is thought to protective to the heart against free-radical
damage. Gum guggul, the standardized extract of India's mukul myrrh
tree is also a heart supplement which helps to lower cholesterol.
