Immune
System
The Immune system is a complex
system that is responsible for distinguishing us from everything
foreign to us, and for protecting the body against infections and
foreign substances. The immune system works to seek and kill all
foreign invaders. The immune system primarily protects us in three
ways. First, it creates a barrier that prevents bacteria and viruses
from entering the body. If a bacteria or virus does enter the body,
the immune system tries to detect and eliminate it before it can
infect and reproduce. If the virus or bacteria is able to reproduce
and start causing problems, the immune system is in charge of eliminating
it.
There are many components to the immune system.
The skin is the most obvious part of the immune system. It forms
a barrier between the body and outside germs. The lymph system
works to drain and filter bodily fluids to detect and fight infections.
The thymus and bone marrow manufacture white blood cells—a whole
variety of different cells collectively known as leukocytes that
work together to destroy bacteria.
The best way to keep a strong immune
system is to maintain good overall health--eating properly, getting
enough sleep, and exercising regularly. There are also certain
herbal supplements believed to boost the immune system. Among those
readily available are Echinacea, maitake, and astragalas. Periods
of emotional or physical stress are known to weaken the immune system.
New research has shown that mega-doses of vitamin C during times
of stress can also help increase the strength of the immune system
by reducing the effects of stress and increasing the production
of illness-fighting antibodies.
