Cellulite
Cellulite is a popular term for deposits of
fat on the body that have a cottage cheese-like or dimpled texture.
Although most people do not consider cellulite to be desirable,
medically, cellulite is not considered abnormal.
The term "cellulite" was conceived
in the early 70’s to refer to the dimpled appearance of the skin
that some people have on their thighs, buttocks, and/or hips. The
appearance of cellulite is more common in women than in men due
to the differences in the way fat, muscle, and connective tissue
are distributed in men and women’s skin. Although female hormones
might contribute to the fat distribution which causes cellulite,
cellulite is not treatable by hormone therapy.
Cellulite creams, massage therapy (endermologie),
and cellulite pills like Cellasene all claim to help remove unsightly
cellulite. Plastic surgery and liposuction is not generally effective
in cellulite removal since deep fat is best suited for removal.
The surface fat which causes cellulite is harder to remove and can
yield unsightly results such as dimples or depressions.
