Fat Burners
Fat burners are the general term given to weight
loss supplements designed to burn off fat. Usually, fat burners
contain some sort of stimulant to increase metabolism and burn off
more calories, resulting in fat loss.
The best selling fat burners currently use
an ephedrine/ caffeine/ aspirin combination which has been utilized
by body-builders for years. Stacker 2, Hydroxycut, and Xenadrine
are all examples of fat burners which use this “stacker”
approach. Although these “stacker” fat burners do have
a long history of success, there are health risks involved. Ephedrine
is a powerful stimulant which can come from herbal sources like
Ma Huang and Sida Cordifolia. Since the ephedra is derived from
a natural source, there are very little controls and regulations
in place regarding its use. People with heart problems, liver problems,
diabetes, high blood pressure, or liver, thyroid, or psychiatric
diseases should avoid products containing ephedra.
CLA
(Conjugated Linoleic Acid) is one
non-ephedra based fat burner which is receiving a bit of attention
lately. CLA is a naturally occurring
fatty acid found in many meat and dairy products. Available commercially
as products like Tonalin, CLA is
thought to increase the production of prostaglandins--fatty acid
molecules which lead to elevated synthesis of growth hormone. Elevated
levels of growth hormone promote enhanced muscle growth and strength.
Taking CLA may therefore increase
muscle and help burn fat, raising metabolism. Other common ingredients
found in fat burners include green tea, guarana, and yerba mate.
