Weight Loss
In modern society, physical appearance appears
to be more important than ever before. Americans are constantly
bombarded with images of physically fit specimens. Meanwhile, the
average person appears to be getting heavier. This dichotomy is
further intensified by increasing amounts of research which highlight
the risks that accompany being overweight. In this environment,
more people are interested in weight loss than ever before. The
billion dollar weight loss industry is a good indicator of the public
desire for weight loss, but the choices can be overwhelming.
Almost any plan geared towards weight loss
can work, but only if the strategy successfully motivates the individual
to decrease the amount of calories they eat, increase the amount
of calories they burn per day, or ideally a combination of both.
Weight loss should always be achieved in a safe and responsible
manner. A diet aimed at weight loss should include all of the Recommended
Daily Allowances (RDAs) for vitamins, minerals, and protein. Regular
aerobic exercise will increase the amount of calories burned, which
will also facilitate weight loss. Resistance or weight training
is often overlooked in weight loss plans. However, developing stronger
muscles will also help increase an individual’s metabolism
which will increase the amount of calories burned—even at
rest.
Successful strategies
for weight loss should also include plans for weight management
after the weight loss phase ends. Keeping off lost weight is the
hardest part of controlling weight. For weight loss to remain permanent,
dietary habits as well as levels of physical activity need to be
permanently adjusted and incorporated into daily routine.
