Love Handles
Love handles are a common term applied to the
extra amount of flab on the sides of the waist that give "more
to love." Many men carry these extra love handles, since men
tend to carry extra fat around the abdominal area, as opposed to
women who generally carry extra fat in the hips, thighs, and buttocks.
Recent research has shown that increased abdominal
fat raises the likelihood of development of diseases including heart
disease and diabetes. However, whether love handles carry this
extra risk is not determined. Most researchers agree that a "pot
belly" is medically worse than "thunder thighs.” However,
some believe love handles are merely a cosmetic issue, while others
contend that love handles are as bad as extra abdominal fat.
The key to losing fat in the hips, thighs,
buttocks, love handles, or anywhere else is to stimulate the fat
cells (or adipocytes) through exercise to release fat into the blood
stream. Spot reduction of love handles is not possible. Burned
fat comes from all over the body. Lunges will not stimulate the
leg muscles to lose more fat first, and abdominal and oblique exercises
will not stimulate fat loss in the love handles.
