Metabolism
Metabolism is the means by which the body derives
energy and synthesizes the other molecules it needs from the fats,
carbohydrates and proteins we consume, using enzymatic reactions
helped by minerals and vitamins. Metabolism consists both of anabolism
and catabolism (the buildup and breakdown of substances, respectively).
The term is commonly used to refer specifically to the breakdown
of food and its transformation into energy. In simple terms, metabolism
is the rate at which an individual body uses energy and burns calories.
Metabolism varies from person to person.
An individual’s caloric needs are determined
by two factors: level of physical activity and resting metabolic
rate (RMR). Roughly one-third of the calories the body burns are
the result of physical activity, which includes anything other than
resting. The remaining two-thirds, RMR, are burned as a result
of regular metabolic activity. This includes the calories used to
sustain basic body functions such as maintaining body temperature,
heartbeat, breathing, organ repair and basic chemical reactions.
Because RMR accounts for a large majority of calories burned, keeping
it high is essential to losing weight and keeping it off.
