Overwight
In this day and age, physical appearance is
an important part of society. Often times, the primary motivation
for overweight individuals to lose weight is aesthetic. However,
there are serious health risks which accompany an overweight condition.
People who are overweight are at greater risk to develop such health
problems as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, gout, gallbladder disease,
and specific types of cancer. Most doctors use a standard height/weight
chart to determine if an individual is overweight. In most cases,
women with a waist measurement greater than 35 inches, and men with
a waist measurement over 40 inches are overweight.
Losing weight can help to improve the harmful
effects of being overweight. Although many overweight people struggle
to reach their healthy body weight, studies have shown that a loss
of just 10 to 20 pounds can significantly improve an overweight
individual’s health. Gradual weight loss of 1 pound a week
is the safest way to lose weight. Rapid weight loss can cause muscle
loss instead of fat. Successful weight loss plans should also include
plans for weight management after the weight loss phase ends. Keeping
lost weight off is the hardest part of controlling weight for formerly
overweight people. Therefore, overweight people need to permanently
changing dietary habits as well as levels of physical activity,
so that the lifestyle that possibly contributed to an overweight
condition is altered.
It is important for
individuals who are not overweight, but have a family history of
problems related to overweight conditions, to maintain a healthy
weight. People who have family members with health problems related
to overweight conditions are more likely to develop them.
