Unwanted
Fat
Many people want to shed a few pounds and unwanted
fat, whether the primary motivation is for health reasons, cosmetics
reasons, or both. While women tend to accumulate unwanted fat in
their hips, buttocks, and thighs, men tend to accumulate unwanted
fat around the waist (love handles) or as abdominal fat. Although
the reasons for this difference are not entirely known, there is
evidence that abdominal fat has more than cosmetic disadvantages.
The unwanted fat which accumulates on the hips, thighs, and buttocks
is not generally dangerous to one’s health. Abdominal fat, on the
other hand, has been implicated in heart disease, diabetes, and
other problems.
Unwanted fat is caused by fat cells (or adipocytes)
which grow large through feeding. When more calories are consumed
than burned, some of the excess carbohydrates are stored as glucose
in the muscles. The rest is stored as fat in the adipocytes. During
exercise, the adipocytes release fat into the blood stream, where
it circulates around to the muscles which use the fat for fuel.
Aerobic exercise stimulates the adipocytes to release great amounts
of fat. That unwanted fat will be burned by the muscles during
exercise. Excess unburned fat returns to the adipose cells for
storage.
The key to losing unwanted fat in the
hips, thighs, buttocks, love handles, or anywhere else is to stimulate
the adipocytes through exercise to release fat into the blood stream.
Spot reduction of areas of unwanted fat is not possible. Burned
fat comes from all over the body. Lunges will not stimulate the
leg muscles to lose unwanted fat first, and abdominal and oblique
exercises will not stimulate fat loss in the love handles.
