Richard Simmons

Many people are familiar with Richard Simmons as a flamboyant health guru and television personality.  The Richard Simmons Diet offers a well rounded meal plan, motivational activities, and fun ways to add exercise to life.  The Richard Simmons diet plans are based on a food pyramid using food groups such as protein, breads, and dairy, which are tracked on his "Food Mover." Richard Simmons also offers an online weight loss club.

Richard Simmons diet plans provide a variety of meal choices, and have a minimum of seven servings a day of vegetables and fruits and two servings of low-fat dairy foods.  The Richard Simmons diet breaks down into a ratio of 60 percent carbs, 20 percent protein and 20 percent fat.  The recommended calorie intake is 1,200 calories per day.

Also available through Richard Simmons is a wide variety of weight loss products, ranging from supplements and vitamins, to exercise videos, motivational cassettes, cookbooks, dietary instruction booklets, and the Richard Simmons "FoodMover,” a convenient pocketbook system to keep track of daily food allowances.

Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers is one of the most widely used and established commercial weight loss programs in the world.  Founded in the early 1960s by Jean Nidetch, Weight Watchers has a global network of classes or meetings involving 25 million people per week.

The Weight Watchers program is centered on the Weight Watchers point system, which focuses on gradual calorie-reduction.  Although no foods are forbidden, consumption is restricted to a certain number of daily points.  The majority of dieters following the Weight Watchers program join a weekly class where they meet other dieters, exchange ideas, and receive support and advice from the class organizer.  Weight Watchers also provides an online at-home program. 

The amount of structure and support in the Weight Watchers system make a useful and successful starting point for many dieters.  The Weight Watchers point system raises awareness of the comparative caloric value of foods, but dieters will need to develop healthy eating habits to ensure weight loss and health.  Similar to all other commercial diets, individuals on the Weight Watchers plan will need to learn how to maintain their weight after the program ends.  

Jenny Craig

The Jenny Craig weight loss program is possibly the most well-known commercial weight loss program available.  Jenny Craig is a well balanced plan that offers counseling and other optional tools to make facilitate weight loss.  The Jenny Craig weight loss program philosophy features a holistic lifestyle approach to weight management, which includes building a healthy relationship with food and living a more physically active lifestyle.

The Jenny Craig weight loss program works by making long-term lifestyle changes, resulting in losing weight (1-2 pounds per week) and keeping it off.  Jenny Craig helps the individual build healthier relationships with food by offering balanced meals in controlled portions designed to stress moderation, not deprivation.  Personalized menus are available with a variety of pre-packaged and pre-portioned meals and snacks.  An active lifestyle is encouraged by offering a variety of natural, recreational, and planned activities, with tapes, videos, and other support tools available.  Jenny Craig also supports balanced living with strategies on relaxation and stress management.   

Although the cost of the Jenny Craig diet program might be a deterrent to some, results are generally positive provided the dieter learns how to maintain their weight after the program ends.  

NutriSystem

NutriSytem is a popular commercial weight loss program.  NutriSystem initially started as a weight loss center-based diet program, similar to Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, but has repositioned as an online weight-management program.

The NutriSystem weight loss program focuses on pre-packaged meals based on balanced nutrition (60 percent carbs, 20 percent protein, 20 percent fat) which are convenient for controlling portion size and caloric intake.  Besides the balanced diet and portion control, NutriSystem is also easy an easy program to follow, and does not require much cooking.  Weight loss is relatively quick, and support is readily available in the form of online bulletin boards and chat rooms.  The NutriSystem diet program also has online nutrition classes and a member newsletter.

Although the cost of the NutriSystem diet program might be a deterrent to some, results are generally positive provided the dieter learns how to maintain their weight after the program ends.  

Zumba

Zumba is a relatively new fitness and weight loss program designed by well-known South American fitness instructor Alberto “Beto” Perez.  Included in the Zumba program are a series of workout videos and a book of Beto’s healthy eating tips and recipes. 

The Zumba workout videos focuses on the aerobics style Beto made popular in South Florida health clubs.  By combining popular Latin dance steps (like the Meringue and Salsa) with aerobic workout routines, Beto’s Zumba workouts focuses on exercise, and ways to make it fun.
